WN started out as being a regional player in CA. It's very understandable why VX did what they did but I think AS's strategy of not putting all the CA eggs in the two baskets of LAX (horribly splintered market, very hard to make money in, just look at UA and AA backing out service) and SFO (hard to get traction on UA when they'll just dump a 777's worth of capacity on you) and doing significant stuff in SJC/SAN is stronger. Accreting markets bit by bit over time isn't as sexy as transcons with lie-flats and velvet ropes but it might be more sustainable long term.
