I just completed a five-night stay here. Branding as an Andaz was definitely a bit misleading, as I think it would be better labeled as a Tommie (Thompson, but not as nice). The rooms are definitely overpriced and underwhelming. As a GLOB, I was upgraded from a standard king to a city view king. In addition to being quite small, the overall room design was pretty terrible. The bed is basically right behind the bathroom sink, which would be less annoying if there were an actual divider between the two, aside from a narrow mirror that does absolutely nothing to keep out the light and noise from the restroom. In fact, the light from the shower/WC was basically acting as a spotlight directly to where the pillows on the bed are. The WC also had a very funky odor, possibly from the wood they used on the floor. We ended up purchasing an air freshener to cover it up. There was also a giant round support column in the middle of the room, between the bed and the window, where you might expect a sofa or chair to be, which is part of the reason why the bed is basically right beside the sink. The closet is in a terribly awkward place, in the restroom, between the sink and the shower (the closet door blocks access to the shower when open). From looking at the floor layout on the fire exit sign, it appeared that all of the non-suite rooms were about the same size and design. The rooms without a giant column in the middle of them were the ones with two beds.
The minibar was fully stocked, but most of the snack items were not free ($140 for a chocolate bar?!). The minifridge is lukewarm at best. The front desk staff is also untrained. I tried to redeem my $100 WoH giftcard and was told that they do not accept them, going to the desk well before checkout to ensure that I could get my bill sorted out in a timely manner. I explained that the hotel was clearly listed on the WoH website as a participating hotel. I had to return later on when the manager arrived to redeem the card, and even then, it took nearly 30 minutes for them to process it, which was especially aggravating as my ride to the airport had already arrived. I only asked the concierge for directions, but he had no idea how to get to a large shopping mall that was only one station away on the nearby subway (Parque Delta). The hotel also has elevator attendants in lieu of a keycard system, which was very odd and awkward. But they only seemed to be working in some of the elevators, and at completely random times. There are four elevators beside each other, but only two go to the rooftop. The rooftop elevators have a separate call button from the other two, so it is good to call both banks when waiting for an elevator.
The one bright spot was the rooftop. The pool deck offered a spectacular view of the city, including the skyscrapers in Polanca, centro, and just about everything on the north side of CDMX. The heated pool was the perfect temperature and a great spot for a quick dip with a view. We did not get a chance to try the food at Cabuya (rooftop bar/restaurant next to the pool), but the cocktail menu was very good and competitively priced (everything was $210). The food menu looked interesting, as well. The view of town from the restaurant/bar area was not nearly as good as from the pool, but at least the design provided shade and kept the wind out. The breakfast in the lobby coffee shop had an OK menu of warm breakfast items and decent quality food, but the options were somewhat limited.
The location in Condesa meant that there was a plethora of dining options, including many 24/7 spots, just a short walk away. The Chilpancingo subway station is only two blocks away and the 1 Metrobus is just across the street, providing easy access to the city. There were also numerous shopping options within a few minutes walk, including Sanborne (next door), as well as Sears, Mercado Medellin, and many smaller shops. In summary, the location and rooftop are very good; while the actual hotel leaves a lot to be desired. Unless they lower their rates, I would not consider returning unless I had a FNC to burn and a compelling reason to stay in Condesa. There are plenty of better options for 1/3 to 1/2 less. At least now I know why all of their SM posts focus on the lobby and pink escalator instead of the rooms.
