I agree with your comments - my loyalty comes from business travel and OPM - and I try to pick Marriott properties for these reasons.
However, I would like to offer a #4 reason - and that is, as sometimes the case with other "but I am a good customer" relationships there can be a general expectation of "cant you bend the rules a little for my benefit". While that is a topic that we can discuss (or not) - it does get a little frustrating when on one sides the rules are so concrete that there are no exceptions (such as these types of extensions) and then there is the vague, inconsistent, and frustrating rules and policies that surround the other benefits - like using SNA, upgrades, and even basic recognition
