Glad your travel plans are sorted - you should certainly only pay economy taxes / charges if you have been downgraded. You may have to chase Virgin up for the difference - they aren't good with tickets that involve a change of class.
It isn't my area of expertise, but I would think that any involuntary downgrade should result in some form of compensation - assuming you didn't waive any such rights when you accepted the alternative flights.

I didn't accept the flights at all.
I was on the phone to them last Thursday and the agent said she needed to contact the other airline and would call me back.
She didn't call, so I rang again on Friday, at which point my Virgin booking was now showing Emirates flights on their website.
It didn't specify class, but the agent confirmed the downgrade, which I said was incorrect/not accepted.
I have read in other places that no loss has been suffered until the flight is taken, so technically, I would have to take the flight and then claim. Any truth to that?
Are taxes and charges identical for each airline undertaking the same route?
What would happen if the economy taxes for the new airline are more than the premium taxes with Virgin?
