I agree with everything you said, including the parts of your post I omitted. I would just add that, in my experience, that time of the morning is quite possibly the worst to be arriving at FCO. Coming from the US, the OP will be able to use the e-gates, but I have never quite fathomed their purpose, as one still needs to present one’s passport to an agent thereafter. In general, though, and perhaps somewhat surprisingly, given how little else in the the country is, FCO is a modern efficient airport, and I’m happy to have it as my local airport.
You probably go through it more frequently than I do, but yeah, the morning can be really bad. I've also had times where I didn't wait at all. Other times I've sat in the EU line when the other passports line had no wait. That said, I've experienced the same at CDG.
FCO is a good airport. In the past month, I've been through both T1 and T3, and it's really gotten a lot nicer over the last decade.
