In my case, the impact to my current choices of airline will be minimal - as SkyTeam alliance itself is much inferior compared to the OneWorld alliance offerings in terms of ground facilities and services provided by the different alliance member.
However it does give me some open opportunity if VS offers better sales/fares to competitor - previously I would have not considered VS, but now I will add them to my alternate list.

Browsing on the earnings of Flying Club with respect to the different earning categories looks quite good - and depending on your flying status, it could be an easy way to quickly earn ST Elite Plus status (FC Gold).
