If they have a ticket, there's a contract of carriage, and they are required to get them to their destination one way or another. if all flights are full, that's another matter. As a European airline I don't think they can just tell someone to buy another ticket or pound sand.
AF wasn't full when they asked KLM to put them on it. They just refused.

Yes KLM is paying for the hotel etc. so at least they are doing something right. Thanks for that last bit of advice.
