Not speaking to the taxes, but don't be surprised if this doesn't work in the future (changing routing, changing direct to a connection or vice versa). It's against the fare rules and AS has been clamping down on it. YMMV.
Something may have changed recently along these lines...just tried changing an SFO-JFK flight to SFO-EWR, and was turned down by two different agents.
While I know this used to be an unofficial exception they made for elites, seem like that might be changing.
Anyone else with similar experience as of late?
