If you're on one PNR, then yes, it's never a problem to go to the GA and say that you're ok splitting up if only 1 upgrade is available. In these situations a good GA will often page you up and ask if you want to be split or not, had that happen several times.

If you're on separate PNR's, then whenever you call AA to get your companion seated next to you and on the upgrade list, just tell them then whether you're ok being split or not if there's only 1 upgrade available. Similar to above most good agents will ask when you make the request.
If I am traveling as an EXP with a companion (who has no status) on the same PNR, do I need to call AA to ensure that they receive the same upgrade priority as me? Or is AA pretty good at this always happening?

So let me make sure I have the baggage issue straight.

I need my companion to have my three checked bags benefit. If I split the PNR to ensure that I get the upgrade if there is only one a available seat, I cannot then re-link our reservations before we get to the airport so they can get my baggage benefit?
