More logical imo would be to look at the lowest fares for the desired cabiin across airlines offering the route than playing games
If I consider it imperative to travel in J I'll pay for it and often do. However if it's just something nice to have but not essential then I'm happy to play the upgrade lottery. I didn't post on here to be lectured but rather to gain a constructive insight into the workings of Qantas upgrades.
