The article I read noted there was an accommodation shortage due to the storm and the next available flight was in three days. The choice for passengers was to take the bus or sit for three days in the airport. Weather happens, maintenance happens, crew shortages happen and the "IR" in IRROPS stands for irregular. I don't consider this a bad look on WestJet but more a reflection on the increasing number of whiny passengers who can't deal with a little travel disruption.
