Before the merger with SPG, you'd have been hard-pressed to find many non-Americans who were big on Marriott Rewards. The core Marriott brand has always meant bland and boring, but delivering the same thing everywhere. Exactly what a road warrior might want in Indianapolis or Tulsa but not really in Paris or Venice.
It's no surprise that many hotel owners have opted for more exciting brands - especially in the bling-tastic Gulf.
