My understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that this is only for someone showing symptoms upon arrival. If you are trying to do that instead of taking a test before departure due to not meeting the vax standard, you probably won't even be allowed to complete check-in or board your flight.

COVID-19 testing after entering Japan

Passengers who are required to isolate on arrival will be tested for COVID-19 infection at the arrival airport. You may have to wait for a lengthy period at the airport until the test results are ready.

If the test result is positive, you will be required to stay at the facility specified by the quarantine.

  • Those entering Japan with symptoms of suspected COVID-19 infection will be tested upon arrival. Furthermore, those who test positive will be required to quarantine at a designated facility.
