If it says it will waitlist, no. Award and upgrade inventory are separate. The presence of one does not indicate the existence of the other.

If you go this route, book the new tickets before you cancel the old ones just in case something doesn't go through. What happens if you try to book an award MEL-SFO-BOS? If it comes up as a mixed-cabin itinerary, you can waitlist for the front cabin on the SFO-BOS segment for no extra charge.
