My understanding is that you have to choose flight by flight whether you want Alaska benefits or AA accrual. It would depend on which frequent flyer number you have in the reservation, but that can be changed flight by flight even at the gate. This remains true even on partner flights such as BA, JL, or QR. I agree tat Gold/Ruby benefits are minimal. Domestically I could match them with a credit card. Internationally I'd want at least Platinum/Sapphire.
