I always try to change to a flight that's a similar amount of money, I don't want to have to deal with the system's weirdness too much. So I'll change to something within a few dollars price-wise so that the full credit is on one confirmation number. That said, if you do it multiple times you may end up with multiple confirmation numbers with a credit - you CAN use up to TWO confirmation numbers when applying them to a future booking.
