Did the cancelled flight mean that you missed work or a night at a hotel you booked? If the answer to these questions is no, then I would say APPR is your best route, since for Montreal Convention to kick in here you need to show actual damages. To give you an example, let's suppose I booked a 5 night stay at a resort villa in Honolulu that costs $2,500/night and due to my flight getting cancelled I missed the first night at the hotel. In that case I suffered $2,500 in damages and could claim that under the Montreal Convention. On the other hand if my flight gets cancelled but AC puts me up in a hotel, provides meal vouchers, and I didn't end up missing work or a hotel night, APPR might be the slower (albeit better) option since you'll get $1,000 no questions asked. Now granted you might have to fight for it a bit more appealing to the CTA or small claims court but in theory if the cancellation can't be justified by things like uncontrollable factors like weather or a strike of airport security personnel, the airline is on the hook.

I appreciate your response. We didn't really suffer damages that I would be able to provide information about. Example, Yes, we flew in on Monday morning instead of Sunday evening which meant a day of work. I wouldn't really be able to prove those damages since I work for myself and organize my own client meetings. We didn't need a hotel or meal because we were staying with family in the US so we extended for another evening. That's why I think we would be better off going the route of APPR. I have never gone this route before so I don't know exactly what it entails. I'm quite certain that AC provided us with the $300 e voucher because most people wouldn't fight this and would just accept it. I totally get that response because I feel that way partly as well. However, it totally irks me that AC can get away with this and for that reason, I really want to push back on this. I just don't know how I'm supposed to do that. Is there a form through APPR? Do I just respond to the AC email saying that I won't accept their offer? I'm not sure the proper route to deal with this.
