I ended up going for the gallery option suggested above and used the gallery2 alpha version because the original stuff looked plain ugly and the new one is really quite neat.

Myphoto is a tool that exposes your pictures from iPhoto onto a webserver but as far as I could tell, it required that you had the same mac as the webserver which I do not want.
