1) Since you aren't all on the same PNR, UA didn't have to or maybe even know to move all 10 of you to the same flight. Since they moved all 10 of you, there must have been space to do it.

Yes, we have received reservation updates with new routing and confirmation in J class. We have 3 separate PNRs and each one does show confirmation in J, just no seats available to select for 3 people in my group.
Your comment does make sense...they wouldn't have moved each PNR (4, 4, & 2) over if there wasn't space.
