I remember doing this at a SPG hotel just prior to the merger. No points/stay credit which was communicated at check-in when I asked, but they gladly entered my loyalty number, and I got what seemed like a slightly nicer room. They also allowed me to collect Starpoints for MAGC (I verified this at check-in), which worked out nicely for a 2+ week stay.
