You need to call their Corporate's/customer service line and explain this to them. Corporate for both Staples and OD fixes issues within a few days for ridiculous individual store protocol. You can spend 10 minutes to fix a problem permanently at your store.
It's not worth putting corporate eyes on a procedure that I know will pass muster, so I smile and they smile and a minute later after the service they use confirms my credit, they let me pay.
I suspect that they want to make sure that the card has not been stolen or otherwise compromised. The only funny thing is that they are using 20th century techniques for doing so.
