The first thing you should look at is the itinerary itself. Did it originate in Europe? Even if the flight that was subject to cancellation was a domestic connecting flight, if the trip originated in Europe (including the UK) then EU261 applies not APPR which IMHO provides a better opportunity to claim compensation. In addition if the trip involved an international flight (including trips to the US) the Montreal Convention would likely apply which provides up to $7,000 USD in compensation and arguably is easier to enforce since Canada has been a party of this regulation for decades now.

the flight was a YYZ-MSP which was coming to pick us up in MSP and doing the return trip to YYZ. It apparently never made it to MSP so we had no aircraft and it was the last returning flight to YYZ. So, there was no aircraft for us. AC booked us the following morning. I don’t know whether this is considered an International flight so not sure how to follow up.
