I am a gold member with 0 points but got upgrade with my platinum AMEX card. Looking to make use of the gold status if i can. Am i right to assume thats only possible if i book directly with Marriot Bonvoy website?

If i get same hotel cheaper via trivago etc am i right to assume i wont get the benefits of the gold status?
