Just a random data point. I just checked out from a 2 night stay (booked with points), and was upgraded to a Kyoto king suite. I was surprised by the upgrade and the front desk said they don’t normally upgrade to that suite, but did because it was my first stay with them. It is obviously slow season, so I’m sure that played into it. I am a globalist.
