Lufthansa (small) involuntary change

(mods: feel free to merge this to a more suitable thread if that makes sense)

I’ll admit I’m fairly inexperienced dealing with LH customer support but also that my experience so far has been nerve recking.

ok… I had a flight (A class) scheduled for late October (LH metal to TYO and then OZ to GMP). The ticket conditions don’t allow for refunds and changes are 410 eur a piece. I’ve been hoping for a schedule change to be able to cancel.

The Asiana flight had a slight schedule change (very slight: 15min). And I got an email with three options: accept, find alternative flights or “I want to cancel my flight and use my ticket later”. I called to confirm I couldn’t get a refund and as expected I can’t. All good - I expected as much with a minor change.

Now I was curious what the conditions of that third option would be - email is sparse - and clicked on “I want to cancel my flight and use my ticket later” assuming I would (just like with any cancellation process) see a summary of what happens next … until when can I use it? What are the conditions to rebook etc

it immediately cancelled my flights and removed them from the PNR. Upon multiple calls to the LH call center everyone tells me the email is “automatic” and “wrong” and all they can do is try to restore my original itinerary. Emphasis on try.

otherwise any use in the future is subject to ticket conditions - I.e. the 410 eur fee.
the email read “Your current booking will be cancelled but the ticket and booking code will remain valid to book new flights. To rebook, please contact our Service Center.”

Is this correct that I’m due to pay the rebooking fee if I want to change dates ? Is my only option to (apparently just try) to restore the original flight ?

I understand the schedule change isn’t big. But what bugs me is the lack of clarity of the language. No where does it say something like “remain valid to book new flights where original ticket conditions will apply”. I also never expected clicking the button to yield an immediate action.

is there anything I can do here or should I try to reinstate my booking asap?
