FWIW, a few hours before the DOH-MLE departure, AA on Twitter found J space and asked me if I want to reissue the ticket. At that point I decided to just stick to the Y segment with my travel companion, but it shows that segment could be upgraded by itself and issued as a new ticket, at least when previous segments have already been flown.
