Trip report time! I found Adahan DeCamondo Pera to be a far-superior version of its sibling property, DeCamondo Galata. It's amazing what wonders effective and operational AC can do for a property ;-)
Here are my pros, cons, and photos:
Pros:
- Upgraded the morning of arrival to a Junior Suite (earlier upgrade a few hours before had been to a Premium King room)
- The Junior Suite was very solid with an effective living room, cute little terrace to enjoy the vines on nearby buildings, large bedroom with desk, and the largest bathroom I have had in Istanbul so far
- Styling was better in person than it looked on pictures - nice mixture of red accents to cut the large amounts of white, pretty crown moulding, nice textured walls, nice old wooden floors that weren't too creaky
- Noise isolation inside the building was decent - you can hear things from outside, but it was far less distracting here than at DCG
- Climate control (AC and heat) was effective and easy to control (the biggest problem at DCG)
- The bed was pretty comfortable - large pillows, mattress was just-right and even a tad plush, covers a tad thin, but they were comfy
- Wi-Fi was effective and reasonable for an old building (better than DCG)
- TVs had YouTube
- Shower pressure was very nice and strong, and I love the full glass door
- Left a gift of some Turkish snacks - not my cup of tea, but nice gesture
- Turndown service performed and left a pillow chocolate from Godiva (first time in IST)
- I had to ask, but no issue with 2 PM checkout
- Interesting check-in
- I arrived and noticed that there were many folks working in the lobby on a cosmetic renovation project
- The only person at the desk looked to be a bellhop, but I asked to check in, and he started going through the process - he seemed a bit slow at it (lots of double checking), but he apologized for the wait and kept going at it
- After he completed the process, he called one of the men from the renovation over who appeared to be a manager to greet me, apologize for the wait, and explain the elite benefits
- When I came down later, the desk was staffed with multiple agents who said hi, etc, so I realized the bellhop actually did check me in - rather than ask me to wait, he went through the process himself - to me, that's a great sign and great initiative
- After the bellhop (same one who checked me in) escorted me to the room, he took me up to the rooftop restaurant for a welcome drink
- I can't epitomize how kind and friendly the restaurant staff were - I had a lovely iced latte, and they brought over some really tasty lemon tarts as a "surprise"
- One of the male waiters had such a contagious smile and a bubbly demeanor (reminded me of the waiter I had at the STR Rome), but all of the staff was great
- Elite welcome gift breakfast (served 7 AM to 2 PM) was fantastic
- Same setup as DCG - Turkish breakfast board and a menu of a la carte inclusions
- Same staff as the day before - so happy to see me
- Delicious Turkish sausage omelet
- I ordered pancakes, but they brought me pancakes and french toast
- Really tasty lattes
- They walked around with "surprises" from the kitchen - not sure what it was - seemed like a crepe, and it was really good - I had two
- A manager/concierge type walked around at breakfast asking tables how their stays were going
- EUR-TRY exchange rate used was fair
Cons:
- Bathroom door always moved closed unless you put the trash can in front of it and blocked the toilet - could be a bit stuffy in there
- Breakfast pancakes were a bit overcooked for my taste, but perhaps that's a Turkish thing?
Overall, this was an exquisite stay. I would highly recommend.
