There's always other airlines once you hit a certain point. I personally held off flying BA last year when I hit GGL as there wasn't any point in earning a few 100 more TP that would be zeroed a month later, even if they did count towards GfL (I would rather spend the cash on my new year where they would count for renewal and GfL).
Wonder if there's anyway BA could offer a sort of "grace period" for using GUFs and/or redemptions as a GGL?
i.e. say SYD flights open up in CW 355 days out. Only allow GGL to book for the first 2 weeks (is this similar to what Air France or Lufthansa do where they restrict some premium bookings to status holders, although aren't they year round?) or even like GCH choosing seats at the time of booking, silver at 7 days and bronze at 3 days.
