What you say cannot be accurate. If you have a flight in the morning, and there is a 40 hour layover, then your arrival is TWO days before, not the day before. And you MUST claim your luggage (forgetting every other problem) because LAX is your first point of entry to the US, and you can't recheck at LAX for a flight from ONT.
