But this change is literally resolving the point you're saying they need to get rid of. If no non-preferred seats are available then the seat map will release adjacent preferred zone seats for no charge for purposes of allocating an adjacent seat.
When I was a kid in the 80s, my parents brought my sister and I on many family trips. In every single instance, we ended up sitting together (and without any shuffling routines). Same goes for my normal flights now (mostly on China Eastern narrow bodies); people who want to sit together end up together.
