Yep, an airport overnight can make a big difference. Some (most ???) airports don't allow a luggage check-through, when this is an overnight connection. For example BKK. And, it is difficult to find out which airports do and don't allowed.
Thanks for your input. My flight is later in the year. I suppose I could pop by the Cathay check in counters the next time I'm at the airport and ask an agent if they know if CX, and specifically through HKG, will allow a short check.
