Did you just search NYC-YUL on Expedia and this routing was populated? And it was on a single PNR?
I've had Expedia offer LAX-MEX-SAT (LAX-MEX on DL metal) before. However this was as part of a multi-city ticket. I've never had it offer it for straight OW/RT.
