Yeah, that is a thing. A JAL thing. JAL is the only program I know of that does divorced segments, and not all segments are restricted, but some are. And, it can change.
I just ran into a divorced segments situation with QF, when using AA miles: trying to get DFW-SYD-BNE in J. AA agent saw DFW-SYD confirmed, but any flight to BNE under 24-hour layover came back unconfirmed. If the connection was over 24 hours, the second leg was OK. I also asked to add SYD-PER with 5-hour layer in SYD, still unconfirmed. This looks like the same restriction that JL imposes.
