They can be good for hotels/car rentals but booking direct still has advantages. Last year I booked a non refundable/no changes allowed stay at a Westin. Had to change a a week at the last minute and called the hotel directly and they let me cancel and refunded me within two days. An OTA would have just said " sorry ".
It depends. Main issue is did you book a hotel rate or an OTA block of rooms rate. Hotel rate the hotel can offer to cancel for free. Block/bulk rate only OTA can offer as the booking is really with THE OTA.
