My guess is the 777 is used for leisure travel market to/from Hawaii. While Hawaiian Airline is the primary carrier for leisure travel for Hawaiians, there may be enough traffic for United to allocate an underutilized 777. The late departure from SFO and early arrival from LAS line up well for connections.
LIving/working in the San Francisco Bay area, I told a Midwest client that I was going to be out the next week on vacation. My client asked where I was going since I was already in a major tourist area
I laughed at the question, said I was going to Maui but had the exact same question for Hawaiians. Where do they go for vacation?
I learned that the prime destination for Hawaiian residents is Las Vegas. I believe Hawaii is one of two states that does not have any state sanctioned gambling.
When I go to Las Vegas, I try to visit the California casino as it caters to Hawaiians (i.e. Hawaiian food, ABC store, Lapperts, dealers in Aloha shirts, etc.)
