If you leave the top off the empty and aired out fuel bottle, it can easily pass as an (empty) water bottle. And since an empty and purged fuel bottle represents ZERO flammability hazard, there shouldn't be an issue. (Of course, as seen from some of the posts in this thread, logic doesn't necessarily enter into it.)

An "empty" propane/butane cannister is a completely different story.
