Daytime the area feels very safe, active. Walked from Red Line Chinatown to hotel around 11pm on Friday night and seemed fine. The too be expected mix of young groups out bar-hopping and other various denizens of the night, but wasn't bothered a bit. (Note- larger Male, so usually feel pretty safe walking about. YMMV).
That is good to hear. And, nice review. I lived in DC for most of 2011-2021 and the area around that Safeway has sort of had a life cycle from quite decent to lots of activity (crime, not bar-hoppers) to okay again. Usual city cautions still advised at night, of course, but it's good to hear that you didn't feel unsafe at night, and I'm glad to hear this property is a decent affordable option for a solo traveler.
