In September 1985 I bought a RTW ticket from a bucket shop in Amsterdam. At least half of it was on Cathay Pacific. This was pre-internet, pre-Google Translate. Routing was Amsterdam - Frankfurt - Hong Kong - Bangkok - Singapore - Sydney - New Caledonia - Auckland - LAX - New York - Amsterdam. The price was $1100 US. The culture shock from Europe to "The Orient" was huge and I found Hong Kong incredibly exotic and foreign. Stayed at the Youth Hostel that was on top of Mt. Davis with a stunning view of the city lights. $8 HK per night ($1 US). I remember taking the Star ferry over to Kowloon and a rare English speaking person told me not to bother buying the first class ticket (which allowed you on the top deck) since you get there (in 2nd class) at the exact same time. A year and a half later, when I got home, I had still managed to hang on to my Tiger Balm! RIP Hong Kong.
