Normally when calling SQ for available space, the agent would simply provide you SQ availability. That is very distinct from *A availability. Unfortunately, SQ doesn't make its longhaul flights readily available for *A awards which is what you were looking for with the additional segment. The screenshot I provided above (JFK-FRA-CPH) is an example of an SQ flight as a *A award (note the search tab is on "Star Alliance" and not "Singapore Airlines").
OK, I think I get what you are stating. If SQ has award space available for a SQ route, all on SQ metal I am good to go. But If I want to get from WAS to NYC to SIN, I am out of luck, even if SQ has *A award space available for WAS to NYC. Whereas, if I booked with AC, for example, and space was available for both the *A short haul and the SQ long haul, I'd be good to go (and I just experimented with that and SQ was available via AC for a long haul on a random date).
