In my opinion, this is a case of Denied Boarding. It would be easy and clear cut if it was AF, but AeroMexico will deny coverage since this was leg inbound to EU, most likely. And AF will initially deny because it was AM who denied the boarding, even though they were the ones who messed up the ticket.

Good news though, you can sue them in the UK in small claims easily enough. I believe you will win.
