We've only got one passenger's comments but even if the decision to return to AKL was the right one (and comments here suggest it was) and assuming the main reason was JFK, where NZ are in full control is the experience when passengers land back. Its not like they didn't have time.

It would be interesting to hear from other pax how the disrupt was handled.

IIRC (I know I can scroll up &#128514 when the flight launched and they had to leave bags behind some pax were not even informed on landing in Auckland 16 hrs later.

I guess my point is AirNZ could have helped any bad publicity by handling the pax comms and disrupt experience better perhaps? (again one source only not exactly reliable)
