I am getting ready to make a move from SFO to AKL and want to take my backpacking gear to New Zealand. In the past, I have had mixed success transporting my camping stove and empty gas canister with me on the airplane as checked baggage. I am flying UA to SYD and connecting to AZ (trying to maximize UA EQM's!) Was wondering about people's experiences with transporting these items internationally, and in particular any situations with TSA at SFO taking these things. I have made sure to empty and air out my canister so there is no gasoline odor and clear and drain the fuel line of my MSR stove so that it doesn't have any fuel in it. I don't want to call UA as I am afraid they might then put something in my record.
