Huh, that's a massive negative change from a few years ago. I've made countless changes to higher cabins that open up award space close to departure, without the other flights in the booking necessarily having award space at the time of change (I'm already booked into it, that was enough before). This is news to me. It basically makes the free award change useless for me for long haul itins.
Still doesn't explain why they don't even see the new segment by itself. That's definitely a discrepancy, unless they looked at it wrong.
