Taking a look at some other CX routes, JFK, BOS and YYZ are all flying through Russian airspace, but indeed none of their European flights are.
Perhaps the North American routes are being done out of necessity, to avoid fuel stops.
I guess it's more like CX is trying to avoid Russia because EU to Aussie is the main revenue of CX.
