Just to make sure I'm understanding, you mean space in the cabin, not space in the fare class?

Uh oh. One of my upcoming use cases would also be part of an international award itinerary.
Was your award AS-ticketed? I wonder if the issue was (a) award via another carrier, (b) itinerary has non-AS carriers on it, (c) itinerary is an award, or (d) some combination.
As
TravelingZoomer notes, option-A doesn't always present a problem. Though I wonder how any would be. For example it seems like AS would have even more control over an AS-ticketed award.
Maybe asking at the airport would have presented a different result than calling in, assuming airport agents process SDCs differently?
