Do you know that's their policy for sure? Because now they have two displaced customers (one downgraded, one offloaded) vs. just one if they DB the J passenger.
Separately, I think it makes sense that the cabin is overbooked by 2, plus two people who will be assigned the pilot rest seats. That wouldn't be that surprising several months out. Yes, leisure travelers are less likely to change plans than business travelers, but I think post-pandemic and with the elimination of change fees that gap has narrowed quite a bit.
