ORD or EWR to KEF is a quick flight (both around 6 hrs). I would not want to spend half of that travel time backtracking from FRA, even with the potential extra sleep time to FRA from the US.

I fly to KEF 2-3 times a year and I prefer FRA in the middle - I arrive much much better rested than the typically 5-7am and then 45 min ride into Reykjavik
