Indeed, it would be counterproductive, as Z would open before any upgrade space.

It's possible, in that SHARES will allow it, but I don't know of any policy that would permit it.

OP: When you look at the itinerary and select Fare Rules, what do you see?
I don't fully understand when / why / how this gets offered, but I have seen it put a segment in B without treating it as a fare break and with F not sold out. The website will give the fare rules as (city pair) KOA-PRG ; (fare class) B/Z/Z ; (fare basis code) Zxxxxxxx.
