Before calling BA, I checked online if there were any seats for sale in CE on his flights. The outbound showed as bookable, but the inbound didn't. Therefore I was expecting that I could only get a price for the outbound.

The agent, however, quoted a price for both legs and I was able to confirm and pay for an upgrade on the entire itinerary for both passengers.

I'm currently not paying for ExpertFlyer, so I could not check availability on the fare buckets. However, even if I'd checked, I imagine I would've seen J0.

Did BA oversell CE on the inbound? If that's the case, flights were flown and my friends were not downgraded. Not sure if any other passengers were!
They may simply push the curtain a row further back and open up an extra 4 CE seats.

Only person who may get annoyed is the person who payed to be in the first row of economy and now finds themselves at the back of the plane!!
