Update...

This practice seems to be nearly universal now.

A FDA at check-in this week said "we've seen a huge uptick in fraud attempts recently" and followed it up with "make sure your Hilton password is secure." She said that "more than once a week", they're seeing attempts by scammers to check-in under false names since "credit cards are attached to user profiles" in Hilton's system.
